DAY

Ollantaytambo – Socma – Ollantaytambo

In the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel/hostel in Ollantaytambo at approximately 7:00 – 7:15 am. We will start our one-hour journey to the village of Socma, where we will begin our hike towards the Perolniyoc Waterfall, which is almost 100m tall and dominated by pre-Inca ruins called Qorimarca. After about 45 minutes of uphill hiking, we will reach the first point where we can appreciate the waterfall. We will stop there for a moment to enjoy the view and take some photographs. Then we will continue for about 30 more minutes, slightly uphill, to reach the archaeological site of Raqaypata. After some explanations about the site by the guide and taking photographs, we will start hiking downhill. Finally, we will return to Socma where we will take our transportation back to Ollantaytambo, arriving around 2:00 p.m.

Included

  • Tourist transportation: This is important as it provides a safe and comfortable mode of transportation for tourists to reach the starting point of the hike. It also ensures that the tour group can stay together and not get separated on their way to the hike.
  • Professional guide: A professional guide is essential for a successful hiking tour as they provide valuable information about the history, culture, and geography of the area. They also ensure the safety of the group by providing instructions on how to navigate the trail, and can provide first aid if necessary.
  • Snack (water, cookie, fruit): It’s important to bring some snacks and water on the hike as it can help to keep energy levels up and prevent dehydration. These snacks are also a good way to enjoy the hike and take in the beautiful scenery.
  • Walking sticks: Walking sticks can be very helpful in maintaining balance and reducing the impact of the hike on the joints, especially on steep inclines and declines.

How to get to the Perolniyoc waterfall from the city of Cusco on your own?

Whether you’re in a large group or just a few friends, go to the Pavitos stop near the Grau bridge in the city of Cusco. This is the stop for collective taxis to travel to Ollantaytambo. Make sure the taxis will pass through the Huarocondo-Pachar route, as they may also take the Urubamba route. After about an hour, you will enter the Pomatales valley that connects Anta with Ollantaytambo. Get off at the bridge stop, and most drivers know about Socma.

For those with their own transportation, follow the cart path uphill at the bridge junction, and there you will find the village of Socma. For those without their own transportation, there is a path that leads to the village of Socma that takes about 30 minutes.

This Inca trail leads to the waterfalls and then to the archaeological site of Raqaypata, which is located on top of a rocky promontory just above the waterfall. Walking for 3 km in 2 hours will bring you to the beautiful Perolniyoc waterfall.

Additionally, after enjoying the freshness of the environment at the waterfalls, there is an option to continue on the Inca trail to reach the archaeological site of Raqaypata or also known as Perolniyoc. It is an additional 45-minute zigzagging climb for 1 km.

What can I see around the waterfalls?
